80. SUGARCANE


                                                     SUGARCANE




Sugarcane looks like a long stick of 6 to 19 feet tall with joined fibrous stalks that are rich in sugar. Sugarcane can be eaten raw but you have to spit out the fibre after drinking the juice. The juice is very sweet forms a good drink on a hot summer after noon. It is equally nutritious. But sugarcane is mostly grown to prepare sugar and jaggery.

The stalk of sugarcane stores energy in the form of sucrose in the sap. Sugar is extracted by evaporating water.
It is a good idea to visit a sugarcane juice shop for a glass of nutritious juice instead of purchasing a bottle of soft drinks, which is harmful to health.
Benefits:  
1. Sugarcane is low in glycemic index and keeps the body healthy.
2. Sugarcane is rich in carbohydrates. It can help a sick person regain energy quickly.
3. Sugarcane is useful in the treatment of sore throat, cold and flue.
4. Jaundice: Sugarcane juice is recommended for jaundice patients. It speeds up the recovery process.
5. Cancer: since sugarcane is alkaline, it can help fight cancer. (mainly prostrate and breast cancer)
6. Diabetics: sugarcane does not have simple sugars. Hence diabetic patients need not fear about eating sugarcane or drinking the fresh juice.
7. Sugarcane is believed to strengthen kidneys, heart, brain, eyes and sex organs. It clears the urinary flow and helps kidneys perform its functions with perfection.
8. Sugarcane is good for people suffering from micturation, caused due to high acidity.
9. The bagasse that remains after sugar cane is crushed is burned to provide heat the sugar mill and electricity.
10. The bagasse is also used in the production of paper, cardboard and eating utensils.
11. The bagasse is also used as animal feed.
12. Molasses obtained after extraction of sugar is used as a sweetner and as syrup with cookies and cheese.
13. Sugarcane is used in the production of rum, an intoxicating drink.
